POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR SUPPORT
If you’re applying for Disability Living Allowance (DLA) for a child and would like personalised support, you’ll find our DLA service below.
POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR SUPPORT
When someone you care for is experiencing meltdowns or behaviours that are difficult to understand, it can be hard to know what they need or how best to support them.
Our Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) consultation looks beyond the behaviour itself to understand what may be driving it — helping you identify patterns, understand your loved one’s individual needs and find ways to prevent difficult moments before they happen, rather than simply managing them once they’ve started.
This assessment is completed by Topaz, a qualified Learning Disability Nurse with over 10 years’ experience.
WHO IS THIS SERVICE FOR?
This service may be suitable if you’re a parent or carer who:
Is unsure what is causing or contributing to your loved one’s meltdowns or behaviours
Wants to understand their needs on a deeper level
Is struggling to identify patterns or triggers
Wants practical strategies for supporting them
Needs a clear plan that can be followed consistently by the people supporting their loved one
Would benefit from supporting evidence for an EHCP application
There is no one-size-fits-all approach to Positive Behaviour Support. Every person has different needs and abilities, so the assessment is built around your loved one as an individual.
How this service works
BEFORE YOUR CONSULTATION
Once you’ve booked, you’ll be sent an Incident Recording template.
There’s no pressure and nothing you need to get “right”.
It simply gives you somewhere to record real, recent examples before your consultation so that Topaz can begin looking for patterns and understanding what may be happening.
YOUR 4-HOUR PBS CONSULTATION
During your 4-hour consultation, Topaz will use functional mapping to build a detailed picture of your loved one and explore the different factors that could be contributing to their behaviour.
This can include:
Sensory Needs
Understanding whether sensory input or sensory sensitivities could be contributing.
Processing & Communication Needs
Looking at how your loved one processes information, communicates and understands what is happening around them.
Environmental Needs
Exploring whether particular environments or circumstances could be affecting them.
Escape & Avoidance Difficulties
Looking at situations they may be trying to escape or avoid and understanding why.
Transition Needs
Exploring how changes, transitions and moving between activities or environments affect them.
Emotional Expression
Understanding how emotions are experienced and communicated.
Health Needs
Considering whether health-related needs could be contributing to what you’re seeing.
Triggers
Identifying situations or circumstances that may lead to behaviours.
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER YOUR CONSULTATION?
Topaz will take time after your meeting to reflect on what you’ve discussed and carry out any additional research needed.
Within 5 working days, you’ll receive:
Parent/Carer Report
A written report summarising what has been identified during the assessment and the main priorities moving forward.
Colour-Coded Positive Behaviour Support Plan
A clear, practical PBS plan designed to be easy to understand and follow by anyone supporting your loved one.
Clear Action Points
Practical next steps based on your loved one’s individual needs and what has been identified during the consultation.
Your report and Positive Behaviour Support plan can also be used as supporting evidence for an EHCP application.
